What is the difference between

1.If they were to cancel the deal, I would be devastated.

And

2.If they canceled the deal, I would be devastated.

3.If you were to go home you would feel better.

And

4.If you went home you would feel better.

Are they same? If not what is the difference.I have tried finding out, but in vain.

Are they same? Thank you. The 'were to' form is simply an alternate formulation of the usual past tense that's used in the if-clause of a conditional.
