In recent years design is increasingly considered among academics and managers, as an important strategic asset and a lot of researches have shown the links among design, innovation and competitive advantage.Although several studies reclaim and emphasize the fundamental role of investment in design, to achieve high performance, other studies show that this relationship appears to be conditioned by the processes and the organizational approaches adopted by businesses to promote innovation. However design is considered through one of the most common definitions, which many times is likely to limit it to a purely aesthetic appearance and no related to the idea of innovation. In this thesis, the design concept is extended and that allows to consider it more broadly, and away from the common opinion that it would firmly linked to the only forms and style of products. The goal of this work is to identify if, according to the interpretations associated with the design, coexist different organizational profiles, to support innovation and in what practices and methods they differ. The questionnaire adopted and implemented after the review of the latest management practices to support the design, has allowed us to propose a new way to evaluate and analyze the processes and methods of organization within companies. The survey was then conducted on a sample of companies belonging to the Italian furniture industry. Through factor analysis, which allowed to reduce the complexity of the phenomenon studied and later through cluster analysis, there are four groups of companies ("Style", " Design Engineering ", "Design Thinking" and "Design-Driven Innovation ") characterized not only by specific organizational configurations to support the innovation process, but also distinguished by different innovative and competitive performances.
