My feeling is that the word "farther" is gradually dying out and will eventually become obsolete. I don't think I ever use "farther", whatever the context. Obviously not everyone is the same.

Obviously. 'farther' is still alive and kicking in the U.S.

I live farther from Denver than I do from Seattle. 'further' sounds wrong to my American ears.
