Hi
I wrote this passage.Do you think that I use except correctly? I wanted to express my positive opinion about first and second line courses. Would it not better to replace except with besides?

Except the fundamental courses like food chemistry, food microbiology and food technology, some elective studies including dairy science and technology, raw milk microbiology, meat science and meat microbiology can specifically help me to become a successful person in my future career.

If you are taking those courses, you can use'''in addition to''
Here ''except'' sounds you are not 'taking those courses.
