What is the difference between
1.When he came, we left.
AND
2.When he had come we left.

Is the difference is completeness of the action?

I mean in the both the cases we left after he came but in the first case may be his coming was not that complete and in the second one we left when he had come.

Please throw some light on this.
Thank you.

If he came to the party at 7:00 PM, then 1 implies that we left at, say, one second after 7 PM, while 2 implies that we left at, say, 7:01 PM.

To my ear, it's like this.

1. sounds like we left as soon as he came and maybe because he came.
2. sounds like we had been waiting for him to come, and we only left after we were assured that he had come.

So in 1. it sounds to me that we weren't
