I am building 100 houses and numbering all of them. How many 9s do I need?

Hi

Is this not a riddle? You'll need 9's for 9, 19, 29, 39, 49, 59, 69, 79, 89, 90, 91, 92, 93, 94, 95, 96, 97, 98 and, finally, two for number 99

So, if we're counting the character 9, you'll need 20. It's actually not counter-intuitive - it's ten for the first place digits and ten for the second place digits

Are you building them all on the same side of the street? Emotion: hmm

dave_anonit's ten for the first place digits and ten for the second place digits
But if you're going to 1000, it's not 30 then, is it? It seems to me it should get more complicated the higher the power of 10.

I think he is. But it's OK because they're on a Moebius strip.

Hi

I thought for a moment Clive you were going to say, suppose it's cheaper to buy 9's for 6's and hang them upside down. In that case, we could buy forty

Do we never use 'a' before numbers?

Hi

That's interesting. I would write:

- I am building 100 houses

- I am building a hundred houses

The article goes before the word but not the numeral. Others will correct me if I'm wrong about this

Thanks Dave and califjim for answering.I have heard that we write single numerals in words eg., one, twenty etc., but we can write the numeral for numbers that have more than one word in them eg., 130 (One hundred and thirty). The O.p should actually have written : I am building hundred houses and numbering all of them. How many 9s do I need?
