Grammar

Hello. I've got difficulty understanding this sentense:
Membership grew rapidly as women deserted the many other, less directed, groups and joined it.

Especially, I am wondering why there's a comma between 'directed' and 'groups'. Could you give me help?

Top answer

"less directed" modifies "groups", meaning that the groups didn't have such a clear focus or purpose. e. additional to "many other groups".

  • The author may also have felt that "the many other less directed groups" was hard to parse, though I'm not sure I necessarily agree.
