I tend more to putting a word "usage" in my sentence above, than "use" but I'm not sure...

Usually, 'usage' is just a pompous way of saying 'use'. I try to use 'use' whenever I can.

We will still need a sentence. As they stand in isolation, either could be the better choice.

For someone who has pontificated on grammar for quite a few years now, I am still dismally unsure about the supposed difference between these two words.
