In general, past participles can be used to describe a state or condition: a painted door; a spoken message; a broken promise; a sunken ship; a misunderstood statement.
In general, present participles can be used to describe an action: a barking dog; a frying egg (vs. fried egg); a smiling face; a blazing fire.
There are some verbs which use a different form (an open door, for example),

That is poor construction.

We cannot take back sold products.
