I am reading "The Great Expectations" in chapter 5 I have some difficulties understanding This "on the plea of a pipe and ladies’
society"

Here is the complete paragraph:

At last, Joe’s job was done, and the ringing and roaring
stopped. As Joe got on his coat, he mustered courage to
propose that some of us should go down with the soldiers
and see what came of the hunt. Mr. Pumblechook and
Mr. Hubble declined, on the plea of a pipe and ladies’
society; but Mr. Wopsle said he would go, if Joe would.

and how can I get the correct pronunciation of names like Wopsle, Pumblechook,... These names are not in dictionaries and I've never heard them before.

Thanks

  • These names are not in dictionaries and I've never heard them before.
  • Nor have I (since I haven't read Great Expectations ).
  • That is why they are written quite phonetically: just pronounce them as they seem to be—not that they were intended to be pronounced at all.

"Wopsle" is more difficult. It consists of "wops" (
