That sentence was just an example sentence. The intended meaning of the sentence is that $500 would be awarded to each of the people who finish the race. It doesn't make much sense. I suppose I could change the sentence to "$500 will be awarded to the winner of the race." What is your reason for saying "awarded" instead of "rewarded"?
