-Around 70% of American adults were married in 1970, but this ?gure dropped to just under 60% by 2000.

can anyone explain me what is the difference between ''by the year 2000'' and ''by 2000''?

If there is a danger of confusing the year 2000 with the number 2000, adding "the year" adds clarity.

For example, if the prior year it has been 2,002,000, then the number fell to 2 million by 2,000. It's not a very LIKELY reading, but you could cause ambguity by just saying "If tell to 2 million by 2000." Adding "the year" in that sentence makes stylistic sense to me. In the second sente
