Learning roots—and learning affixes—is great for figuring out the general meanings of words that you don't know (if a dictionary is not at hand) and they are also useful as mnemonics in remembering related words. I don't think you should worry about learning them until you are at about intermediate level, though.

You might be able to guess the meaning of words you have not seen before if you recognize the roots.
It's helpful to know the prefixes too, though.

For example, take the word "circumspect." You might realize that this has something to do with looking and something to do with "all around" and guess that it might mean to look all around someting, coming close to the definition in
