heey.. I always wonder when I have to say 'was+ verb' and ''verb+ ed
E.g: I hoped that I could go
I was hoping...

You can always use the simple past. Not all past forms end in -ed, though. The irregular (strong) verbs do not follow this pattern.

I had a car. (OK)
I was having a car. (Incorrect)
