I faced a test and test answer was a little bit odd.

1)There's a girl in John's class that he wants to _____________, but he's too shy.
2)My parents are hoping I'll _____________ with their friends' daughter, but she's really not my type.

ANSWERS:ask out & hook up

the test answer : ask out for 1, and hook up for 2
I chose ask out for the first but when I see number two I prefer hook up for the first one and ask out for the second one. Because hook up is actually means sex! And parents usually wish to start a relation ship, so I thought ask out is more appropriate for the second one and unwillingly chose hook up for the first one. What do you think?

youzou the test answer : ask out for 1, and hook up for 2 The test answers are correct, even though 'hook up' is not the greatest example the test makers might have used because of its secondary, sexual meaning. Here 'hook up with ' more likely means 'get to know', 'get to like'. The choice is clear because of the word "with" in the second example.

  • There is no "ask out with", but there is "hook up with", so "ask out" goes in the first sentence, where there is no following "with", and "hook up" goes in the second sentence, where there is a following "with".

No. The expression "hook up with" is not likely to mean that when you say it directly to someone in that situation.
