When to use 'the'

Can you tell me which of the below is correct and if there is a rule/formula I can use to remember this!
'It's fun scrunching through leaves', 'it's fun scrunching through the leaves' or 'it's fun to scrunch through the leaves'.
Thanks

Hi Sarah, welcome to the forums! All of those examples are correct, it would even be correct to say "it's fun to scrunch through leaves" I'm not sure about the rules, I'll have to ask..

Hi, I think 'the' is optional..

I would say " It is fun to scrunch through the leaves". "The" refers to the fallen leaves.

If you want to say the same sentence but you'd prefer to use a gerund I would say:

"I enjoy scrunching through the leaves" I would use the article because, again, I am referring to the fallen ones.

thanks for this but what's the rules on using, or not using, gerunds?
