The Grapes of Wrath

Hi there,

Has anyone read ' the Grapes of Wrath' by John Steinbeck??

My American friend gave it to me as a present. Since then, I'm trying to read it. But actually it's a little boring!!. Can you imagine I' m now on page141and it has passed three weeks since I began reading it?? I dont why, may be because of the language. The word are writtten as people pronuonce them. Maybe here lies the problem. I am trying to interpret Emotion: rolleyes what the characters of the novel are saying.

e.g somepin means something ..kin means can ... etc. It comes to mind to ask: Are People in America speaking the same way???

What do you think about the novel? Do you recommend me to contiune reading it?

Hope to see replies..

Thanks anyway..

Dear Mythical Lady

You are so great.! You have read the famous novel" The grape of wrath " by John Steinbeck. Though you only read four pages, you've read preface and you can grasp the content of the book. I couldn't read any English novel. It's difficult to search English novel in my district. However, I remember when I was a little girl, I spent a lot of time at the Abraham Lincln libra

Dear Myth lad,

Nice to see you again.I have regret to confuse this novel with the harvest of Jalna written by Mazo de la Roche. It's about a big English family. The author's point of view is not more impressive than John steinbek 's view. It describes a life of farmers, too The woaks but not the Joads. It seemed that I have seen the film." the grape of Wrath" for a long time However, wh

Hi Foong

You have a good memory indeed. It's the first time I heard about a movie presenting such a novel. Anyhow you're right about every thing you wrote about the novel, the frustrating role of banks, (called as monsters in the novel), against farmers, the notorious capitalism that divided the Americans (and so countries I believe) into two distinct classes, poor and rich.

Hi Irene

welcome to thr forum and glad to have you here. In fact I read the first 141 pages with difficulty. Then I decide that looking in the dictionary for every word would be a waste of time (I've looked only for the words written by the author himself not by the characters) But as I proceeded in reading it, I understood the text. And now at last I've finished it. It's really expressi

Hi! Myth; Hi! H'ele`ne.

Me, too. There a great sympathy between me and Ma. She helped the family keep together. However, the scene Ma fought the desire to cry when she was treated as human for the first time since they arrived in California. It didn't make me moved. It liked Yang Don Gung in the role of the slave in The promise film .It made me hate them. There is
