Middle Men

by Doyle Drexel

It’s all about keeping the middleman. The Record lobbyist (RL) recent rodeo round up of the alleged copyright thieves is about protecting profit. RL is an organization much like the mafia that aggressively collect high interest loans. The mafia was well organized. The RL is well organized. They got people (lawyers and lobbyists) in Washington, DC making sure that every American Citizen they name in a lawsuit is guilty without due process. Yeah, I know- if you get a subpoena you can respond to it and have your day in court. But the matter usually evolves something like this:

RL: “ You (or your 10 year old grandkid) downloaded material without payment for use of the copyright”

United States Citizen (USC): “ I have no idea what the hell you’re talking about”

RL: “ Read the subpoena- You’ll understand”

USC: “ Well, you mean these songs were not paid for? Doesn’t my ISP screen this crap for illegal use?
I mean, I do pay them a fee? Doesn’t my ISP have to abide by certain Federal regulations?”

RL: “ No.”

USC: “ Well, I certainly can’t pay for copyright violations now- I have no idea how much was downloaded or if it really was downloaded in the entirety or if it was just a quip from a website”

RL: “ We know because we violated your right to privacy- by the way, John Ashcroft has nothing to do with this. Anyway, we will see you in court”

USC: “ Wait, I can’t afford an attorney? Are you nuts? I work 40-80 hours week. And my SUV takes $60 in gas every 3 days and my spouse just lost their job. There is no way I can afford an attorney ”

RL: “ Are you saying you want to settle out of court?”

USC: “ Hell yes! What do I need to know?”

RL: " First, lets look at all your assets. Then determine how much cash we take from you. And you sign a guilty admittance to the violation. you sign an apology and you sign that you or kid will not do it again”

USC: “It’s my grandkid…”

RL: “ Yeah, whatever…how much do you want to pay so we can prostitute this process?”

I liked it. You might need to change the first couple of sentences as it almost put me off from reading the rest. That part was a bit confusing first time but he rest was really smooth and interesting.
