Subject and Verb Question

Is the following sentence grammatically correct? Or should the verb be singular ("is" instead of "are")?

The Ceramics Lab Technician or Wax Set-up Operator are responsible for softening point (ring and ball) testing.

I think it should be "is" also.
It is singular. If you were to say "The Ceramics Lab Technician AND the Wax Set-up Operator", it would seem then to be plural (thus requiring "are") . Only one of them is responsible.
