Stanch / Staunch

'It was difficult to stanch the bleeding.'



Does the above sound right? Should I use staunch, or even another word like 'stem' or 'check'?

I think it ws a typo for staunch. Staunch the bleeding is a good way to express this. Check or even just 'stop' would also work.
