Puzzled

What is the word given to a set of initials which stand for a set of words. Eg BT, BBC, QED? I just can't remember

It's abbriviation, or more precisely initial-letter abbriviation. Acronyms are somewhat different, they are pronounced like words, e.g. SARS.
