'JUST COULDN'T MAKE MYSELF DO IT'

Hi,
could someone explain me this expression I have read on Bob Dylan's Chronicles?

'When and if an idea would come, I would no longer try to get in touch wit the base of its power. I could easily deny it and stay clear of it. JUST COULDN'T MAKE MYSELF DO IT. I never expected to write anything ever again.'

Thanks in advance, Jo.
