Is money happiness or not?

Question

Here's a sample of my essays that can be debated with students. That's one side of the coin. They should discuss this side and the reverese side too, moderated by teachers.

Money is happiness

There are questions which never get an answer, people say. Like this. Does money mean happiness?
A Jewish saying says : If you have money in your pocket you are wise, nice and you can sing will too. Though if we take Madonna as an example if you sing well you can become rich. But let’s end philosophy and have a look at the problem.
Who are the people who say money doesn’t mean happiness ?
Firstly, the poor . It’s some sort of delusion. It’s well known the story about a very ill king who needed a happy man’s shirt to recover. He sent
Someone to bring a happy man’s shirt. His prime minister and the richest merchant, both said they were not happy with all that immense concern they have. The man sadly walking back saw a beggar frying sausages singing happily. He said he was happy, why shouldn’t he be? A shirt? Man, I haven’t got a shirt!
It’s slightly controversial. This story is said to be happened in England. It could have been one of the scarce sunny English afternoons. Probably. But was he so unconscious? Or drunk? Drunk after drinking what? Brandy for free? Mystery.
Secondly, the rich. They say it somewhat apologizing for being rich.
But they all know that the answer to 99 questions from 100 is MONEY.
You cannot buy friends but still have the possibility to choose enemies of higher standard. All of us wanted to be rich or richer. But who remembers anyone wanting to become poor. And think about the charity actions you can do if you are rich. Bill Gates has just donated 100 million dollars for AIDS patients care in India. Thousands of them can be grateful to him for living.
Money , of course doesn’t automatically mean happiness. We can say, though, that even if money will not bring you all the happiness you desire at least it makes it possible for you to be unhappy in comfort.
Ands we shouldn’t forget what Oscar Wilde, the famous novelist said: “ When I was young I used to think money is important in life. Now, being old I know it is.”

Having money is an important issue in our lives but having the time to enjoy it is even more important. I'm afraid if Wilde lived in this day and age, he would probably agree with me. Isn't there a saying that says: "Time is money". One of the things I enjoy most is going for a walk on the beach when there is noboby around. It gives me lots of energy and it is completely free but if I didn't have the time....

This is what you sent me by e-mail. It is a good start for an essay, good as a reading exercise but not ready as a lesson plan. Lesson plans need to be easy to follow in a classroom situation. If there is too much text together, it's easy for a teacher to get lost. More on this later in the TEFL section......

Tks for your observation I'll test these kind of texts on my intermediate - advanced students too. You know, I would just want to do something different. And used the good points that I have for this, like creativity. I would like to have book which could be used at free conversations , rather than in class at school . I have an English club here, and participants who habve a certain level of English like these type of contradictory talks about their actual problems and not only the old " talk about your best friend" stuff. Just think how fantasticly and creatively was the classical Essential English written. Or RA Close's books. Or LG Alexander. I believe the basic role of a teacher is to make students think , create and be creative. It's easier to develop executiveness in a creative student then vice versa. What's your opinion about that? And your experience. Of course you 're probably right if you wanted to say that I should focus on forms more ( and not only in poetry ) . But I believe ( Personal marketing is my definition for this), we must do what ewe are good at. That is my book, The Thoughts of a Private teacher , about. Maybe I seem stupid and seems to teach a much superiorly educated professionist, but I don't mean to offend you. Actually it's pity we don't have pros like you and your colleagues hearby. Yeah, I forgot. Arthur Koestler said that the most important feature of a genious is not perfection but originality. Not as if I considered me one. I alsobeleive that there are three groups of people: the first little group is doing things, another much bigger one watch th eothers doing things, and a little little group that make things happen. I'm sure woodward that you consider yourself being in the third group. We need you there.

I love the idea about a book for free conversations. We also have an English Club here where not only students go but also native speakers and teachers get together to talk about life and such. The controvertial topics are frequent in our high level classes, and it is fun to take the opposite position from the students (even though you might agree with them) so as to get them defending their ideas and as a consequence, communicating, expressing themselves.
It's true that one of the teacher's roles is to make students think and create. Creative is very important in the learning process. If you continue doing the typically monotonous "What do you do in your free time?" questions, it is a lot less challenging for the students, especially at higher levels where they are probably sick of hearing that question from their different teachers over time.....Do you know how many times students will hear that question from when they start learning English until they reach an advanced level? It's scary to think about it

I think you SHOULD continue with poetry....you have talent which is not an easy thing to have, especially for poetry which is VERY difficult to master. What do you mean by Forms?
Yes, you are right, we should do what we are good at....but only if we like it and want to.
If you hate doing something you are good at, why bother? Life is too short to be wasted.

I think your poems are... mnn great, brilliant, superb. Would you mind if i used them in my own classes. I was thinking of an exercise the other day, which I actually think might work fine. A  hove a lot of young students and friends who loves this style, which is much closer to their world as the poems taught at shool. It also makes them think about creating images, thoughts , changing their attitude towards literature in general. When I launched my volume in Hungarian, at the launch I organized a reciting competiton for teenagers ( my poems only) with total prize of 4oo Euros ( a lot of money in Romania:):)). There were 16 paticipants, some of them really good. Now I want to organize an other competition in September, made of three parts: poetry analyzing, poem writing and a contest about literature. ( Hungarian) with the same prize again The p[urpose is natuirally the promotion of my poetry volume, but I get lots of interesting images about their life, way of thinking, which helps me in educating them in  a positive , succcess- orintated way. As about my poems in English I'll soon have a site with all my poems in English ( 80 ) poems. Thanks for the appretiation again, it makes me feel extremely well. And I'm also waiting for your students opinion. Maybe we can organize a poetry writing or analyzing competition on your site (s) too.
