I tried to contact the company by phone yesterday but I didn't manage to. Is it this what you wanted to say?

DorisP, welcome to the forums;

"I tried to contact the company by phone yesterday but failed." is a valid sentence, and quite well formed.

Maj's suggestion is fine too.

"I wasn't able to contact the company by phone yesterday" - also
