Down the drain

They lamented that so many years of conventional partnership were going down the drain. Would this sentence be correct? Can you improve it?

Maj, what purpose does the word conventional serve? Maybe it is superfluous. Other than that, I for one, can see no problems.

Maj, what purpose does the word conventional serve? Maybe it is superfluous. Other than that, I for one, can see no problems. If it were me I would probably include 'the fact' ;
