"Do an exercise" is correct. Some languages use the equivalent of "make" for all activities. Unfortunately, in English, we use different words for different activities, and there is no rule, you just have to learn each one! Sorry!

And in the U.S. we usually "take a shower"! As Brian says, you just have to learn which verb goes with each activity, and sometimes the answer in British English is different from American English.

I think different "from" is ok in both of the countries. However, different "to", as Khoff suggested, is limited to BrE usage and different "than" to AmE.
