Democratic and republican?

Could someone please explain/go into detail as to what these terms mean? I have looked up through the dictionary but still couldn't comprehend it. I hope someone will explain it in terms that I can easily comprehend. Thanks in advance.

Note that the actual words "democratic" and "republican" have little relation to the political parties that share the name (not intended as a criticism).
