Cosmopolitan and metropolitan

Hi. "Cosmopolitan" usually refers to a person who has lived and travelled in many countries, especially one who is free of national prejudices. It also means "sophisticated" or "urbane".

"Metropolitan" means "having the characteristic of a metropolis (city)", constituting a city and its suburbs: the metropolitan area.

In the sense of cosmopolitan city, it means that the city consists of people from many parts of the world, ie the people in the city are collectively very cosmopolitan.

Cosmopolitan = consisting of people from many different countries and cultures:
Metropolitan = relating to a metropolis [which is the principal city of a country or region]

So London is a cosmopolitan metropolis. Metropolitan cities will include [in England] Birmingham, Manchester, Liverpool, Bristol. Liverpool is also a cosmopolitan city.

actually dear word cosmos means whole world and therefore cosmopolitan city means a city having dwellers from all over the world....

excuse me, you missed out Leeds.....totally cosmopolitan since the 1990's
