Confusing passage

A kid from school wrote in a letter to a pen-friend:

We had been mailing to each other for several times after your leaving to America. However, we had lost contact after you had become busy with your examinations. Not long after, I lost your address and did not hear from you either.

Would anyone be able to correct the above confusing passage? A billion thanks for helping! URGENT T_T

Hi, this is a little trickier than it looks. The easiest way to make sense of the sentence is to put it all into the past tense; however, this kills the tone. If you use the tense established early in the first sentence, then it’s a pretty difficult job Any volunteers?
