Teaching

answers to questions about teaching in Calif.

Hello everyone! If you've wondered what it's like to teach in the USA, let me say that it's quite difficult. Unless you are willing to teach elementary or secondary education, the jobs for teaching ESL to adults will be EXTREMELY difficult to find. I have an adult education credential in ESL, CBEST, PRAXIS, and I'm finishing my MA in TESL. ee-yi ee-yi oh!. I've got more initials than alphabet soup!

Seriously, though, the reason why it's hard to find full-time jobs is that community colleges find that it's so much cheaper to hire an MA to teach ESL part-time and then pay no medical or dental benefits. Even the Japanese schools have discovered this trick, and you'll find political science majors, economics majors, and whatever teaching English as a Second language at places like Language Systems. The best and the brightest are not found at LSI, but you will find friends of the directors teaching there.

I'm sorry to break the bad news to you. Maybe someone can name a place that treats its teachers well and pays them enough to live comfortably?
