Clearer or the clearer

Dear teachers,

Please help me compare the following sentences:

Of the two examples, the second one is the clearer.

Of the two examples, the second one is clearer.

Do these two sentences sound ok to you? If not, which is a better one?

To me they both sound okay, but if you reverse the phrases, only the first one works. The second one is the clearer of the two examples. I don't believe I would ever choose to say-- The second one is clearer of the two examples.
