Letter Writing

application for placement - could you pls have a look?

Hello,

I would like to apply for a summer internship at the governmental department. I have tried to write an application letter, which is below. Can anyone have a look at it and give me some feedback on it, please? I would really appreciate any suggestion concerning not only the grammar, but also the content of the letter.

Thank you very much, I really appreciate your job!
Cheers A.

Dear sir or madam,

I am writing to you to apply for a summer work placement at your department.

My name si AB and I come from Finland. This semester I am studying at the University of Sheffield as an Erasmus Student. I study Human Geography programme with specialisation in regional development and regional policy.

I would like to utilize the opportunity of studying in the United Kingdom and extend my stay beyond the end of the semester over summer holiday. My plan is to spend this time in work placement at a regional planning department. I have explored your internet pages, and I was very interested in the topics you are dealing with, such as the creation of Local Plans, Joint Structure Plan or Local Development Framework. I would like to apply for a 4-week placement in June or July, most preferably at the Department of Forward Planning.

During my prior studies I have been working on several training developmental project. We were mostly engaging with rural microregions’ strategic plans. I am very reliable person and I can work hard. The stay in Yorkshire gave me a good opportunity to get in touch with local environment and people, and, I have to say, it has really caught my heart.

I believe, the placement would really help me in my future studies and prospective career. It would enhance my theoretical knowledge on a practical process of communal planning and it would also give me the opportunity to compare the British planning practise with the Finnish one. I think, I could learn a lot and spend really enriching summer in this way.

Thank you for considering my request. I am looking forward to your reply.

Yours Faithfully,

AB

I take it that you will also be sending a resume or CV and this is the accompanying letter? It's not bad but its just full of what the placement could do for you. It doesn't say anything about what you could do for the department.

Dear Nona,
thank you for your comments. You were absolutely right. I tried to rewrite it a little bit and add more about the benefits they could get from the placement, but I feel it still is not enough.
Yes, this is supposed to be the cover letter with enclosed CV. I have added the information to the end of it.
Could you please have a look at it again and help me to make it better?
